As Washington Huskies fans pour into the streets of downtown Lincoln this weekend, we take a look at the city that they call home, Seattle. Downtown Seattle is the largest downtown of any of the Husker’s opponents this year. It is home to a number of large corporations including Amazon, Nordstrom and Starbucks- of which they have 44 locations in the downtown area alone.
The area itself is one of the densest downtowns in the country, mostly due to the fact that it is squeezed together by hills to the north and the east, Elliot Bay to the West and mudflats to the south.
Randy Hurlow, VP of Marketing and Communications at the Downtown Seattle Association, explains what makes the area his organization oversees so great.
“Downtown Seattle is a vibrant urban center which is home to 58,000 residents, half of the city’s workforce, more than 1,100 retailers, as well as to the region’s top destinations for arts, sports and entertainment attracting more than 21 million visitors annually. Downtown Seattle also has a strong environmental ethic, and is nestled between the shores of Elliott Bay and Lake Union with breathtaking views of Mount Rainier and the Olympic Mountains – providing both a picturesque setting and close proximity to recreation activities for outdoor enthusiasts. As a world-class center for culture and commerce, Downtown Seattle is location to the iconic Space Needle and Pike Place Market, and is home to the corporate headquarters of Amazon.com, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Nordstrom, Starbucks and many more of the world’s most respected companies, organizations, research and educational institutions.”
As we did last week with the city of Fresno, below is a comparison of the city of Lincoln and the city of Seattle and their respective downtowns.
